65sqm Social Housing Project (WIP)

Post by bentleykf » Fri Aug 26, 2011 5:28 am

Over the last two weeks I've worked with another student to produce our first design solution to a 65sqm appartment for youth at risk of becoming homeless. We used Sketchup and LightUp together to test whether our resolution of the internal spaces worked. LightUp was invaluable in the design process because it gave us a great sense of daylight and it also informed us of design issues that aren't that obvious in plan or in a sketchup 3d model. It also helped with integrating material choices into the design process, which IMO is a good break from a pure form-based design process.

Very nice design group of images!
Communicates the design intent very well.

Did you create the sectioned plan by cutting through in plan & then making faces on the cut walls, etc since SU+LU does not produce sections like that?

The sectional floor plan render is a bit of a faux section. I've just got a ceiling plane that has its faces reversed respective to the position of the camera, and then I ran the render in single-sided mode (see the sketchup image below). You could use the black poche to show positions of doors and windows like in simple floor plan drawings as a sort of easy work around to first cutting your model in half at the desired height that shows the windows and doors, then recreating the geometry above the section cut in single faces. It would be great to get true sections in LightUp. By a 'true' section i mean that the interior conditions of light are still affected by the geometry not shown in the render (ie. the geometry removed by the section cut), so you can get a good sense of sunlight and ambient light in internal spaces all in one render.
