double sided option in shading properties

Post by max » Thu Feb 14, 2013 8:01 am

For fast calculations you can use the 'double-sided' option in preferences. But sometimes, you're forced to use this option even though 95% of your scene has been modeled the right way and only a few parts haven't (trees + leaves, some furniture from 3d components libraries). In those cases being able to check a double sided option in the shading properties of only those objects would be great.

This feature now committed - found an elegant way of fitting it in. :D

A right-click context menu allows you to check "No Backface Culling" for an object even if Doublesided is off.
NB This is not the same as "turning on doublesided" for an object, the 2 sides of a face will both use the Front Material and Front lighting, but will not be culled.

Typical use-case, is for stuff like foliage.

Hello Adam,

I'm testing a 'low poly' tree from the 3d warehouse (http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/ ... b8eab3fc46) . I would like to render the file by not using the double sided option in the LightUp preferences. Applying 'no backface culling' on the components still make the branches invisible on one side.

Any ideas or am I mistaken this option would 'fix' that?

greetings, Max

Hi,

Yes, it does do what you think it does.
No, its not as simple to use as it should be.

[The problem is due to the way LU maps your SU model to the actual optimized realtime model.]

You should be able to create a top-level Group of an object to get this working - but as I say, its not as simple to use as it will be.
